Construction Mental Health – Time for Change

A construction mental health book by Michael Turlin

Behind every hard hat is a human being. After 50 years working in construction, I have seen the pressure that deadlines, financial worries, long hours, bullying and working away from home can place on people. I wrote Construction Mental Health – Time for Change because I believe our industry can do better.

Who is this book for?

This book is for construction workers, apprentices, site managers, supervisors, company directors, HR teams and anyone who wants a healthier construction industry.

What does the book cover?

  • Stress, anxiety, isolation and the pressures of site life
  • Suicide prevention and the importance of talking and listening
  • Bullying, workplace culture and the impact of unrealistic deadlines
  • How managers can encourage conversations and support workers
  • Practical ideas for improving workforce wellbeing and morale

Why I wrote it

I know what it is like to struggle with mental health. My own journey from despair to helping others led me to start Construction Buddies. I wrote this follow-up to It’s Not Your Time to share both my lived experience and what I have learnt on construction sites. My aim is not simply to sell a book. It is to help people speak up, feel heard and find support.
